Summer Project Series: Glider Rocker Re-Upholstery

My wonderful Mother-in-Love spent the last week and a half here visiting, and we had a FABULOUS time playing together and working on projects. She is an awesome woman and I am thankful to have been blessed with a wonderful second mother.

My project chair

I have this glider rocker in the living room that Hubster salvaged from a yard sale, and it's a decent piece of furniture. Hubster had to fix a few parts, but once that was done, it has continued to be in good working order.

Old upholstery
However, the upholstered cushions match nothing in my house. I picked a fabric that matched my living room, and also could work with in some other rooms of the house, should we feel the need to move it.

So, project re-upholsery commenced this past weekend.

We started by removing the bottom cushion's cover, seam ripping it apart, and using that as a pattern.

Making a pattern and laying it out to cut fabric
Once we cut all the pieces, we began into the rather intricate process of putting those pieces together in the same fashion that the original cover had been. This is kind of like doing a 3-D puzzle with pieces that are soft...so it was a little bit of a challenge.

However, we conquered, thanks to my MIL's considerable seamstress skills (this is the woman who tailored my all lace wedding dress...she is a force behind a needle, let me tell you!), and ended up with cushions that fit and only had to be hand sewn a little bit to close them up.
Nearly completed cushions
Once we reached this point, the project was cake! MIL and I sewed up the respective cushions and I christened the chair with them, making it seem like an entirely new piece of furniture:

Hooray for Summer Projects!
